German tennis talent makes illness public

Tennis player Eva Lys made public a rheumatic autoimmune disease last weekend. The 22-year-old wrote that she was diagnosed with spondyloarthritis in 2020. Now she thanks you for the reactions and wants to concentrate on sports again.

The 22-year-old reported on Saturday that she had been diagnosed with spondyloarthritis in 2020. The inflammatory rheumatic disease is “a physical challenge that I have to face every day in addition to the physical strain,” the Hamburg resident said on Instagram. The athlete with Ukrainian roots, who was already in the main draw at the Australian Open and the US Open and scored points for the German team in the Billie Jean King Cup, announced that she did not want to comment further about her illness for the time being: “I would like to comment now concentrate fully on the next tournaments.”
Thanks to the “great support and treatment” of her medical team, she wrote at the weekend, she was still able to “pursue her sporting dream and get the best out of myself. But every now and then I am forced to change my tournament planning […] to adapt,” said Lys, who has so far only competed in Canberra, at the Australian Open and most recently in Dubai in February in 2024.
