The death of René Weller causes sadness in the sports and celebrity world. The former boxer shaped his sport and caused a stir later in life. Former companions commemorate the icon.
Ulli Wegner, former boxing coach: “He brought movement into boxing in his time. René was very popular because of his style. It’s sad that he had to die. He made history in boxing. Above all, I have great respect for his wife Maria, who helped him in his heaviest throughout his life. He was an original.”
Regina Halmich, Former World Flyweight Champion: “With René we lost a great athlete. A fighter in the ring like in life, a guy with rough edges. He knew how to fight and present himself. In the ring he gave everything – and from life he demanded the big piece of the cake “Weller was always a guarantee for exciting fights and dazzling spectacles around the square rope. He put up great fights and his fans let him get away with a lot. His lifestyle didn’t necessarily make him the favorite of all mothers-in-law. But it was often a lot of fun with him. I’m very sad, It’s Time To Say Goodbye.”
Henry Maske, Former World Light Heavyweight Champion: “The news of René Weller’s death gives me only a first feeling, he was allowed to go in peace. My sympathy and condolences go to his family. I wish his wife a lot of strength for the near future.”
Thomas Pütz, President of the Association of German Professional Boxers (BDB): “It’s very sad news. He was one of the heroes of my youth and helped make German boxing big. He boxed spectacularly and was also a very dazzling figure at the time. René marketed himself very well, was a Visionary in this area.”
Ulf Steinforth, promoter of the SES Boxing stable: “The boxing community mourns the loss of an important personality. We are sorry for the ordeal, nobody deserves that. We are deeply saddened. He was a role model because he had an interesting personality. Just being able to box well is not enough, he also has a lot Attention grabbed. He was always trying to fill the halls and attract a lot of fans.”
