Putin congratulates Biden on his election victory

A few days after the election as US president, the Russian head of state Putin announced that he would first like to wait for the official election results before congratulating Biden. After the election victory over Trump has been cemented with a majority in the Electoral College, Putin is now following his words with deeds.

Russian head of state Vladimir Putin has congratulated future US President Joe Biden on winning the presidential election in early November. Moscow was "ready to cooperate," said a published statement by the Kremlin. Biden's victory was confirmed by a clear majority by the US electorate on Monday evening.

"For my part, I am ready to cooperate and make contact with you," Putin wrote in a telegram to Biden, according to the Kremlin. Putin wished the elected president success and "expressed his conviction that Russia and the United States, despite their differences of opinion, can solve many problems and challenges" in the world, the Kremlin statement said.

Relations between Russia and the USA are heavily strained. Biden has promised to take a decisive stand against Russia. Moscow is accused of interfering in the 2016 US election to help Donald Trump win. A few days after the November 3rd election, the Russian head of state announced that he would wait for the official election results before congratulating Biden.

In the so-called Electoral College, Biden now received 306 of the total of 538 votes and thus significantly more than the required minimum of 270. The previous incumbent Trump, who still does not recognize his defeat, got only 232 votes. On January 20, Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris are sworn in in Washington.
