Are you dissatisfied with Netflix’s series and have much better ideas anyway? Then prove it! The first AI streaming service makes you the director.
In July 2023, the startup company Fable Studio released an 11-minute episode of “South Park”. What’s special about it: The video was created using artificial intelligence, only the characters and the approximate plot were predetermined. The result was interesting, but not particularly convincing, it lacked humor and both the animation and dubbing were rigid and lifeless.
Since actors and screenwriters in the USA were on strike at the same time and were demanding restrictions on the use of AI, the “South Park” video created by artificial intelligence was heavily criticized. However, Fable Studio was not very interested and the company has now presented the next step in the history of algorithmic entertainment: the first AI streaming service.
“AI can write better ‘The Simpsons’ episodes!”
Even though “Showrunner”, the name of the streaming service, has not yet officially launched, there is a website where you can already register and see the first AI productions. So far, only animated series are possible, and their length rarely exceeds a few minutes.
Even though these are supposed to be in-house productions, the character design in “Exit Valley” was clearly taken from “South Park” and “Bob’s Burgers,” for example. It is also noticeable that the characters hardly move and stare straight into the virtual camera. In other videos, you are clearly dealing with still images that have either been distorted or simply equipped with simple mouth movements. This is even easier to see in mobile games.
The appeal of “Showrunner” is of course the ability to create your own series. You can choose the genre, style and plot yourself – or not, if you prefer to trust that the AI can tell an exciting, funny or dramatic story on its own.
Users who create convincing “showrunner” series will receive a small sum of money, and in return the series will be made available to other viewers. If one of your productions is even sold to another streaming service, “showrunner” will share in the profits – even if the chances of this are rather slim.
As a creative playground, “Showrunner” is certainly suitable, but as soon as Fable Studio starts charging money and selling “Showrunner” as a real alternative to streaming services like Netflix, the severe limitations of creative AI content are likely to become apparent.
