New GPU references for graphics cards which in reality have nothing very original. Recycling, in short…

Everything suggests that next fall will be placed, at NVIDIA, under the sign of the Blackwell architecture and the GeForce RTX 50 series. However, this should not make us forget that the present is always written in Ada Lovelace.

NVIDIA has logically not yet drawn the line on the GeForce RTX 40 series, and a recent rumor even mentions the release of new GPUs for the current series. It’s a little more complicated than that.

Translation of scales or…

Our colleagues from VideoCardz recently relayed a message posted on X.com by one of the most eminent specialists in graphics card leaks, a certain MEGAsizeGPU.

The guy actually highlighted the deployment by NVIDIA of a host of new GPUs with names each more exotic than the last: AD103-175-KX, AD104-150-KX and AD106-255. More importantly, these GPUs have been associated with well-known graphics cards… Enough to lose those less accustomed among us to NVIDIA’s little tricks.

Indeed, as usual, the American brand is carrying out a slight reshuffling of its ranges when the production of a generation of GPUs is well “established”. The GeForce RTX 40 lineup is no exception.

…recycling “defective” chips?

Theoretically, the AD103 GPUs are associated with the GeForce RTX 4070 Ti, but it is the RTX 4070 that will benefit from this AD103-175-KX. In the same way, the AD104-150-KX will be found on the RTX 4060 Ti, while the AD104 GPU range was until now linked to the RTX 4070.

This translation of ranges is actually not surprising. For NVIDIA, this means taking advantage of large quantities of chips that could not be certified for the range for which they were originally intended. Not all of their cores are functional, but by disabling the problematic ones, it is possible to move them to a lower range.

Let’s actually remember that the GPU of a GeForce RTX 4060 Ti for example only needs 4,352 CUDA cores, while 5,888 are needed for that of an RTX 4070. NVIDIA is therefore content to recycle chips which, otherwise , would have been thrown away. So don’t be surprised if you come across a graphics card whose GPU reference is not what you expected.
