real hands-free driving is coming very soon, but not for just anyone

The FSD system, which is still in beta today, is getting a welcome update for customers using this self-driving technology. Not everyone will be affected, however.

In North America, the FSD (Full Self Driving), a very advanced autonomous driving system, is sold in beta version for $15,000. It has already attracted no less than 285,000 North American customers according to Tesla. We are far from the million users announced by Elon Musk, but this figure is nevertheless very interesting and is well above the predictions of some analysts.

Without hands!

Anyway, this system is regularly updated thanks to customer feedback. And a novelty will soon appear during the month of January. Indeed, Tesla equipped with the FSD system will benefit from a new function allowing deactivate steering wheel warnings when using the advanced driver assistance system.

This system makes it possible to check, among other things, whether users of the FSD system remain fully focused on the road, even with the technology activated. But driving warnings have now become “annoying” according to several customers. Thereby, it will be possible to deactivate the audible signal at the steering wheel during the month of January.

Generally speaking, customers will still be “supervised” on how they use the FSD, since the Tesla Vision system already uses the cabin camera to check whether the driver keeps his attention on the road or not.

Thus, some users argued that improving this control system by the on-board camera was probably a better solution than the sound system.

A better “driving” experience

With this update, beta users will be able to have a better self-driving experience. Overall, this is a notable change that speaks to Tesla’s growing confidence in its FSD system.

The update, however, will likely only roll out to vehicles equipped with an in-cabin camera. Thus, FSD beta users with older generations of Model S and Model X will not be able to download the update and will continue to have an audible warning.

Autonomous driving: a very promising new system and competitor of Tesla's FSD is coming

Chinese premium electric car maker Zeekr has announced the arrival of its self-driving system in China. This technology is obviously reminiscent of Tesla’s famous FSD system.
