Introduced with the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro, the Real Tone feature prides itself on delivering the most accurate color rendition possible thanks to artificial intelligence. Now, this technology is no longer limitedto smartphones Google.

Announced during Google I/O earlier this month, the arrival of Real Tone on all mobile devices has now been confirmed. And this concerns both Android and iOS smartphone owners.

A filter integrated into Google Photos

Unlike the latest Pixels, which are able to mobilize this technology as soon as the shutter is triggered, the use of Real Tone is limited on other devices to a filter, currently being deployed in the Google Photos application.

In the same way that you can apply a black and white, saturated or contrasted style to an image, you can now choose the Real Tone filter from the proposed list.

In doing so, Google’s algorithms will work to analyze the skin tone of the subject of the photo and compare it to the light information in the image. This will result in a shot, with supposedly more natural colors.

Real Tone uses Google’s Monk Skin Tone charter, which made it open source earlier this month. It was designed with the objective of correcting the biases of the various pre-existing algorithms in order, in particular, to more naturally represent the complexion of people with black skin in photos taken with a smartphone.
