Make your own modeling clay: ingredients & instructions
You can make your own modeling clay from just three ingredients – and the best thing about it: You are sure to have the ingredients at home!
You need:
- 1 cup cornstarch
- 2 cups of baking soda (baking soda is required for this, baking powder is not a suitable alternative)
- 1 cup of cold water
- As required: food coloring or color pigments
Note: Always use the same cup for the measurement
Utils:
- pot
- Mixing spoon
- Bowl
- Tea towel
- As required: clothing lint z. B. the lint from the dryer
That's how it's done:
- Put cornstarch and baking soda in a saucepan and mix them well together.
- Give the water with constant stirring (preferably with a whisk) and heat the mixture while stirring until it simmered gently. Now reduce the heat.
- Gradually the mass becomes stickier and stickier. Tip: If you want colored modeling clay, you can use a splash Food coloring or color pigments stir in. If you don't color the mass, it will stay bright white!
- As soon as the modeling clay has the consistency of mashed potatoes, remove the pot from the stove.
- Then pour the contents into a bowl. Cover the bowl with one damp tea towel and let the modeling clay cool to room temperature.
- As soon as the modeling clay has cooled down, knead it well with your hands. If the mass still feels too sticky, simply knead in some cornstarch.
- To the surface later a light structure You can knead in lint: This will later create a surface structure on the objects that is reminiscent of stone.
- Small figures, pendants, candlesticks or bowls can then be shaped individually.
- Let the mass air dry: The drying time is at least 1 to 2 days. Thicker objects should dry for up to 7 days. It's best to turn flat motifs every now and then. Finished!

Modeling clay: tips & tricks for modeling
- Use as little water as possible for modeling, otherwise cracks could appear in the object.
- Do not roll out the modeling clay too thinly.

Tip: You haven't used up all of the modeling clay? Sealed airtight in a storage jar or wrapped in cling film, it can be kept in the refrigerator for up to three days.
