Rebel Moon 2 managed to do worse than the first

If it appears in the top 10 films on Netflix, Rebel Moon 2 is experiencing a catastrophic departure. Released anonymously, given the expectations placed on it, it could be the last project in Zack Snyder’s ambitious saga.

Have you noticed it? The second part of Rebel Moon, ambitious sci-fi epic by Sack Snyder, was released on Netflix. A few months after a disappointing first part, we can finally discover the director’s complete vision. And if he hopes to continue the adventure by exploring his saga (we are talking about a trilogy bringing together six feature films), the figures should slow down Netflix.

In its very well documented newsletter published on April 24, Netflix & Chiffres indicates that Rebel Moon — Part 2: The Slasher compiled 21.4 million views after its first week of broadcast (the measurement used gives an equivalent in complete views, for a better comparison). Enough to make it appear in the top of the week, but insufficient to do better than Rebel Moon – Part 1: Child of Fire (23.9 million views). This means that Rebel Moon has lost a lot of viewers since December.

Rebel Moon’s future gets a little darker

If the license only managed to keep 1/4 of the potential spectators of the first film since its release in December for the launch weekend of the second film, this is not necessarily a great success », analyzes Netflix & Figures. Indeed, if Rebel Moon – Part 1: Child of Fire had rained, more people would have flocked to the sequel a few months later. There was obviously neither natural loyalty (the desire to see the sequel after having enjoyed the first film) nor positive word of mouth. We will nevertheless note that the promotion around Rebel Moon — Part 2: The Slasher was much less pushed.

Rebel Moon — Part 2: The Slasher is it better than its predecessor? No, according to the Rotten Tomatoes site. With a poor score of 15%, it is considered Zack Snyder’s worst film, behind the first part of Rebel Moon (21%) and Sucker Punch (22%). This is proof that the universe, which piles up references without any real flavor, does not work. Consequently, its future is murkier than ever, despite very high initial ambitions.

In an interview published on April 17 on Screen Rant, co-writer Kurt Johnstad announced the color: the objective is to offer a trilogy bringing together six films in total. “ If we are lucky and happy enough to continue telling these stories, then that is our wish. Netflix is interested, and we are waiting to hear about the success of the first two films “, he confides. He adds that Zack Snyder has already started writing the third part, while Netflix has not yet made anything official. “ When I say six films, it’s really a trilogy with three films in two parts. That’s how we envision it. But many things can happen. Our ambition and what we want to give are not always in line with economic reality », he concludes.

At the same time, Zack Snyder wants to offer long versions of his Rebel Moon films, which would go even further in graphic violence. Will they be able to save the saga like the Snyder Cut of Justice League knew how to do it? In any case, the figures and returns on Rebel Moon should not encourage Netflix to continue feeding the machine.
