Zack Snyder’s “Rebel Moon” two-parter is finally complete with the release of “The Scar Maker” on Netflix. But how does the story continue?

“Rebel Moon – Part 2: The Scarmaker” may be over, but Zack Snyder’s sci-fi epic on Netflix has just begun – right? This question cannot be answered so easily. What is certain is that both Snyder and Netflix were interested in a long-term cooperation in order to transform the “Rebel Moon” universe into a gigantic franchise with further films and series.
However, the streaming service and Snyder had already made similar plans with “Army of the Dead”, but after a film and a spin-off, all further projects from Snyder’s zombie world are on hold. Does “Rebel Moon” have what it takes to become a film series with a future?

After the first two “Rebel Moon” films were a science fiction retelling of “The Seven Samurai”, the film series has significantly more freedom in the next parts. The world and its characters are introduced and there are still enough open storylines to easily justify further sequels.
For Netflix, however, the main question is whether the expensive production of the first two “Rebel Moon” films was worthwhile. However, this question can only be answered clearly in the summer of 2024, when the director’s cut versions appear. This will show whether the audience is more interested in the adult versions or the brutal versions of the long versions.
Maybe the plan to shoot two versions of each film and hold back the “better” versions for the time being wasn’t quite thought through. If the first two “Rebel Moon” films had been enthusiastically received, people might have been looking forward to the director’s cuts, but now sci-fi fans are either skipping the shorter films and waiting straight for the director’s cuts, or they are waiting straight after the first releases enough about Synder’s film universe.
It can be assumed that Netflix will approach “Rebel Moon 3” differently when it comes. If you want to guarantee a sequel, you should probably watch every existing version on Netflix. However, if you want to make a clear statement in favor of a certain version, sit out the adult version – or ignore the director’s cut.
