Rebel Moon: is Zack Snyder and Netflix’s Star Wars the film of the end of 2023? The first French reviews are in!

It’s one of the most anticipated films of the end of the year, and the first French reviews have just been released. What did the press think of Rebel Moon?

On December 22, Netflix will release Rebel Moon, its big-budget space opera directed by Zack Snyder. The latter takes us to a peaceful colony on a distant moon. As she is threatened by the armies of a tyrant, she places all her hopes of survival in the hands of a mysterious stranger.

This new production led by Franco-Algerian Sofia Boutella is particularly anticipated because its director is an essential name in Hollywood. This great spectacle maker, to whom we owe notably 300 and Man of Steel, has always divided with his grandiloquent style. And his new feature film should suffer the same fate.

While the critical embargo has just been lifted on social networks, one week before the release, it is clear that Rebel Moon divides French journalists and bloggers. Generous, better than Star Wars for some, or a truly soporific film for others, opinions are more than divergent.

What do you think? JV.com :

“This space opera shines with its unfailing generosity and its desire to satisfy all science fiction fans, whoever they may be. From the first moments, references rain down, sometimes for the better and sometimes to… simply have fun. Rebel Moon is the result of a collision between Star Wars (of course), Warhammer 40,000, The Chronicles of Riddick, Foundation, etc. without forgetting the magazine Métal Hurlant without which SF would be very different in 2023. Zack Snyder hopes to please everyone and create the richest science fiction film ever made. He succeeded, but at what cost?”

What do you think? The Digitals :

“The disappointment is all the more bitter as we glimpse a handful of elements with great potential: a formidable legend here, a fabulous king there, a strange and tragic creature at the turn of a scene… These ideas are unfortunately fleeting, before the film returns to its repetitive and threadbare storyline.”

Subtitled The Child of Fire, Rebel Moon is the first in a diptych, the second part of which will be released on April 19, 2024. In recent interviews, Snyder has also revealed that he is working on the third part, which has not yet been released. was ordered by Netflix. If success is achieved at the end of the month, the platform would have found its new SF franchise. Its competitors will just have to watch out.
