Recall: Dangerous mold toxins in rice

A rice recall has been issued. Molds could be detected in the product, which are considered carcinogenic and toxic to the liver.

In view of the second corona wave, people have only just started to stock up on food again. Now, however, the stocks should be checked urgently – because there is now a recall for one of the durable products. It's about several batches of rice.

Recall of rice

Dangerous mold toxins have been detected in several batches of basmati rice from the organic wholesaler Grell. The following types of rice are specifically affected:

  • Basmati rice brown
  • Supplier: Grell Naturkost GmbH
  • Best before date: 11/15/2021
  • Batches with lot numbers: 901584, 901665, 901722

The lot numbers should be found on the back of the packaging, as the supplier explains in the press release. The reason for the recall is the discovery of so-called aflatoxins that exceed the permissible limit. These are natural metabolic products of mold, which can, however, be very dangerous for living beings.

Carcinogenic mold toxins detected

The batches of rice exceed the limit for aflatoxin. The toxin is considered to be highly carcinogenic and liver-damaging even in small doses. If overdosed, aflatoxin can also be fatal to humans.

The supplier warns that the rice should never be eaten any more. The batches should already have been taken off the market. However, if you already have an affected product in-house, you should bring it back to the relevant store. There, customers can get the purchase price reimbursed even without presenting the receipt.

Other batches of basmati rice or products from the manufacturer Grell Naturkost should not be affected, according to Grell Naturkost.
