A recall was published via the EU warning system “RAPEX”. It’s about masks that are specially designed for children – and that do not adequately protect against the coronavirus.

In the corona pandemic, there is now a stricter mask requirement. In some places, such as in public transport or in shops, only medical mouth and nose protection may be worn. Since then there have been numerous OP, FFP2 and KN95 masks to buy. Special types of mouthguards are now even available for children. A warning is now issued against one of these masks.

Recall of children’s masks

The rapid alert system “RAPEX” of the European Union has published a warning in the “Protective equipment” category. Specifically, it concerns the following masks for children:

  • Product name: KN95 Children’s Mask, “KN95 Children’s Mask”, Antibacterial Tech
  • “Suitable for Student”
  • Warning number: A12 / 00556/21
  • Brand: SHUFANG
  • Batch number: YM200227
  • Barcode: 6973078310033

The children’s masks are to be offered online, among other things, they are sold in transparent and blue plastic bags in packs of 10, on the front there is a graphic of a blonde girl with a mask. A detailed illustration of the packaging can be found on the RAPEX website.

Affected mask does not provide adequate protection

The masks are not supposed to offer sufficient protection. In a test, the filter performance of the material is said to have only shown 53 percent, not over 95 percent as printed on the packaging. According to “produktwarnung.eu”, this would not correspond to the European standard and not provide adequate protection in everyday life. Comparable masks of the type KN95 or FFP2 usually have a filter performance of at least 94 percent.

Retailers are said to have been called to take back the children’s masks. Anyone who already has the mask at home should no longer use it, as there is a health risk for the child.
