The European rapid alert system RAPEX has published a nationwide recall of certain FFP2 masks. The filter performance of the products from the affected batch is inadequate.

FFP2 masks have been part of our everyday lives at the latest since only medical mouth and nose covers have been permitted in supermarkets, public transport and in some places also in busy places outdoors. Most people now always have a supply of "filtering face pieces" on hand at home, but those who need an FFP2 mask at short notice can buy one in any well-stocked drugstore or pharmacy. However, the EU's rapid alert system for consumer protection RAPEX has now issued a recall for FFP2 masks for Germany. The reason is an inadequate filter performance of the affected product.

Increased risk of infection due to insufficient particle retention

In order to ensure the quality and effectiveness of the FFP2 masks that we wear for our protection, each batch must have a special approval or a rapid test from an approved test center in Germany. Only products with a corresponding approval from the market surveillance authorities may be sold in this country.

However, it has now emerged that authorities in Germany had issued a permit for masks with invalid or falsified CE markings. The affected products had passed the rapid test. However, further investigations showed that the particle / filter retention of the material is inadequate: instead of the minimum protective function of 95 percent prescribed for FFP2 masks, the recalled mouth and nose coverings achieved only 90 percent in measurements. As a result, an excessive amount of particles or microorganisms can get through the mask and the risk of infection can be increased. It has been proven that the product does not comply with the regulation on personal protective equipment and the relevant European standard EN 149.

The following masks are specifically affected:

  • Product: Particle filter mask KN95 / FFP2 brand
  • Manufacturer: Shenzhen Medical Equipment
  • Batch number: 202006054520
  • Description: 70 masks in a box, as a pack of 10 in plastic packaging.
  • Packaging description: The product is packed in plastic bags and is sold in a white and red carton of 70 pieces.

Anyone who thinks they have masks from this batch at home should contact the dealer and ask him to check it and, if necessary, to exchange the product. Basically, when buying FFP2 masks, it is important to ensure that they have a common CE mark.
