Recall: Free-range eggs contaminated with toxins

Several supermarkets have announced a recall of eggs. The free-range eggs are contaminated with toxins and should no longer be eaten.

Heinrich Goertz GmbH & Co. KG from Niederkrüchten has issued a recall for eggs. It cannot be ruled out that they contain toxins – therefore they should no longer be consumed. Specifically, these are free-range eggs from the "For more animal protection" initiative, which were sold in several supermarkets across Germany.

Recall of eggs

The following batches of eggs are affected by the recall:

  • Brand: "FOR MORE ANIMAL PROTECTION"
  • Free range eggs
  • Size M-L
  • Company: Heinrich Goertz GmbH & Co. KG
  • In the 6 and 10 pack
  • Identity mark: DE NW 40036 EG
  • Print numbers: 1-DE-0355091 and 1-DE-0363561
  • Purchase date until August 1st, 2020

The print numbers should be visible directly on the shell of the eggs. The free-range eggs were sold in the branches of the supermarket chains "real" and "HIT".

The manufacturer gives possible "environmental contaminants above the legal limit" as the reason for the recall. The eggs can therefore contain toxins that are harmful to human health in high doses.

According to the Federal Institute for Risk Assessment, so-called environmental contaminants are, for example, heavy metals and dioxins. These occur naturally in the environment and could have got into the eggs through the chickens' feed. For example, some of these substances can accumulate in the body and be carcinogenic.

We therefore advise against eating the eggs. Instead, the products can be returned to the store. Customers should then be reimbursed the purchase price even without presenting the receipt. In the event of additional uncertainties or questions, consumers can contact the manufacturer's customer service on 02163/33870.

Other eggs from the supplier or products that were purchased after August 01, 2020 should expressly not be affected.
