Salmonella are small, rod-shaped bacteria that can lead to gastrointestinal infections. Symptoms of an infection can be sudden diarrhoea, feeling unwell, headaches and abdominal pains or, in some cases, vomiting and a slight fever. In most cases, it is enough to drink a lot and take it easy. However, an infection can be dangerous, especially in small children, the elderly or people with weak immune systems, and a doctor should be consulted.

Listeria bacteria rarely lead to serious consequences in people with a good immune system. However, a slight fever may occur. Immunocompromised people may experience flu-like symptoms, severe fever, vomiting or muscle pain, among other things. If left untreated, further consequences can include sepsis.
