Recall: Risk of suffocation for several sweets

Ironically, a sweets recall: Almost every one of us should ring the alarm bells, let's face it – most of us have a small supply of sweets at home. And then it's gone quickly. However, you should currently refrain from eating certain sweets.

After a recall, the Federal Institute for Consumer Protection and Food Safety warns of sweets that come from China but are also sold in Germany. Several varieties of the so-called "ABC Jelly Cups" are affected. These are small jelly candies that are packaged in mini cups. Specifically, these are the following products:

The "ABC Jelly Cups" will be recalled regardless of a specific batch or expiration date. It's much more about two ingredients: locust bean gum (E410) and carrageenan (E407). Due to the additives, there should be a risk of suffocation. Both substances are thickeners that are often used in the food industry.

According to the Federal Institute for Consumer Protection and Food Safety, the jelly candy is said to have been sold in several federal states across Germany. These include:

  • Brandenburg
  • Hamburg
  • Hesse
  • Mecklenburg-West Pomerania
  • Lower Saxony
  • North Rhine-Westphalia
  • Saxony
  • Saxony-Anhalt
  • Schleswig-Holstein
  • Thuringia

So if you already have the sweets at home, you should not eat them anymore, but throw them in the trash – or, if necessary, bring them back to the shop where they were bought.
