(CercleFinance.com) – Reckitt lost ground on the London Stock Exchange on Wednesday following the detection of benzene, a carcinogenic chemical, in its famous acne treatment Clearasil.
According to Valisure, an independent American quality control laboratory, high concentrations of benzene have been found in acne creams containing benzoyl peroxide.
According to its findings, the level of benzene exceeded by 800 times the threshold of two parts per million (PPM) authorized by the American health agency, the FDA.
This discovery prompted Valisure to launch a petition to the health agency to request the recall of the incriminated products, the suspension of their sales and the implementation of new regulations.
Analysts pointed out that sales of Clearasil in the United States only represented 20 million pounds, or 0.15% of Reckitt’s total turnover, last year.

Since the Roundup and Zantac cases, investors have nevertheless known that manufacturers can be faced with potentially costly legal proceedings, which led Reckitt shares to drop 1.6% on the stock market on Wednesday.
