“Reckless crime”: Long prison sentence for brutal attack on Radstar

“Reckless Crime”
Long prison sentence for brutal attack on Radstar

A brutal attack on cycling star Mark Cavendish puts two of the perpetrators in prison for many years. The men had attacked, threatened and injured the Brit and his family at their home.

Two men have been in prison for the attack on British cycling star Mark Cavendish and his family. A court in the city of Chelmsford sentenced the perpetrators to 15 and 12 years in prison. They broke into the athlete’s house in November 2021 and threatened him and his wife with a knife. Then they robbed several items, including two watches, worth the equivalent of almost 800,000 euros.

The trial unearthed startling details of the robbery: The cyclist, who was recovering from his injuries at the time, thought he heard “male voices and people walking around the house,” Renvoize said. His wife went downstairs to check, thinking she heard voices coming from the kitchen. “Next she saw figures running toward her,” prosecutor Edward Renvoize said in his pleading. “She ran up the stairs and yelled at her husband to come back into the bedroom. Cavendish then checked for a panic alarm and set it off.”

The jury also learned that some of the attackers then lunged at Cavendish and beat him to get him to turn off the alarm. “One of them was holding a knife and threatened to stab him in front of his children,” Renvoize said. Meanwhile, Peta Cavendish hid their three-year-old son under the covers.

A 28-year-old defendant had confessed to the crime, so he received a slightly shorter sentence. His 31-year-old partner had denied the allegations but was found guilty by a jury. “This was a planned, targeted, orchestrated and reckless crime against an internationally renowned athlete and his wife,” the judge said. Two other perpetrators are still being sought. Cavendish is one of the most successful professional cyclists in history: no one has won more stages in the Tour de France (Cavendish and the legendary Eddy Merckx are both at 34), the 37-year-old has been world champion on track and road four times.
