The EU should not simply adopt US positions on the Taiwan issue, says French President Macron, and this statement provokes outraged criticism. The Green foreign politician Trittin considers them to be unjustified.

A few days ago, after a state visit to China, Macron warned that Europe would become a “follower” on the Taiwan issue by simply adopting the US position. “The worst thing would be to think that we Europeans are followers and have to adapt to the American rhythm and a Chinese overreaction,” said the head of state in an interview with “Politico” and “Les Echos”. The President’s statements had triggered sharp criticism in Western countries, including Germany.
With regard to the visit of Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock to China, Trittin emphasized the need to explore China’s attitude towards the EU. “China is trying to reduce the conflict. They are interested in working with the Europeans. They are willing to give something for that. However, it is unclear what that might be.” Baerbock will try to “find more clarity here,” said Trittin.
