Record in a single day: New Siemens wind turbine exceeds expectations

The development of powerful wind turbines is accelerating noticeably. New technologies, such as counter-rotating double wind turbines, increase effectiveness and ensure that alternative energy sources become more profitable. In the summer of this year, Siemens-Gamesa announced the production of the largest wind turbine rotor blades to date. The subsidiary of Siemens Energy, based in Zamudio, Bilbao, is now reporting the next record on Twitter.

In a single day, the prototype produced 359 MWh of energy. The three rotor blades, each 108 meters long, are among the largest of their kind and span an area of ​​39,000 square meters. The nominal output of the system is 14 megawatts (MW).

According to the company, the turbine also works in a boost mode during normal operation, which increases the output to 15 MW. Only in exceptional cases, with extremely high wind speeds, does the system switch to normal operation.

The Siemens-Gamesa SG 14-222 DD is actually an offshore system. Series production is scheduled to start in 2024. For this test, however, the wind turbine was set up on land in Denmark. The expected energy yield on the high seas should at least equal the record that has now been set, because it was set on a “perfect day”. The energy company RWE, on the other hand, is currently testing the use of black wind turbines.
