Red Dead Redemption port ‘good value for money’? Rockstar walks on its head

Rocktar Games dares to claim that the new version of Red Dead Redemption, coming to PS4 and Nintendo Switch, is a steal. The announcement video has been collecting dislikes since its broadcast.

The pill is hard to pass. A few days ago, Rockstar Games formalized a new version of Red Dead Redemption. “Yippee! thought fans of the cult western game, until they discovered it was a simple port to the PS4 and Nintendo Switch. Not a real remastering, let alone a remake. This does not prevent Rockstar Games from charging the game €50. It’s expensive when you know that Red Dead Redemption dates from 2010.

This high price is not at all to the taste of players, who feel that there is a cruel lack of new features, especially from a graphical point of view (no 60 fps on PS4, for example). Despite the legitimate outcry, Strauss Zelnick, CEO of Take-Two Interactive (Rockstar’s parent company), wanted to defend this commercial policy. On August 9, in the columns of IGN, he indicated that the price was in line with the market and that the integration of the extension Undead Nightmare offered good value for money.

Red Dead Redemption trailer receives dislikes on YouTube

The fans of Red Dead Redemption are so unhappy that they don’t hesitate to storm the presentation trailer released on YouTube. As Gamerant indicates in an article published on August 9, the bad buzz is real: more than 110,000 dislikes, compared to around 36,000 likes. This means that more than two out of three people deplore this opportunistic outcome.

Many things are reproached to this port. Besides the lack of visual optimizations that could make the difference and justify such a price, there are:

  • The lack of a native version for the PS5 (and Xbox Series X), with owners having to settle for backwards compatibility;
  • The removal of the multiplayer mode, but Rockstar Games must estimate that the extension Undead Nightmare is a good substitute;
  • The PC audience still oddly shunned;
  • The fact that the PS3 version of Red Dead Redemption was pulled from PlayStation Plus a few months ago, removing a cheaper way to (re)discover the game.

To make matters worse, the PS4 and Nintendo Switch version of Red Dead Redemption will be technically less successful than the original Xbox 360 version. Owners of an Xbox One, Xbox Series S, or Xbox Series X can already play it thanks to backward compatibility. And they even benefit from some visual improvements thanks to incredible emulation (4K definition and framerate at 60 fps depending on the console). All at an unbeatable price: you can find the Xbox 360 version of Red Dead Redemption around 10 € in the second-hand departments. Otherwise, it is displayed at 30 € on the Xbox market (without the extension). But you can pay 50 € and have less according to the rules of the ” good value for money from Rockstar Games.

We recall that the studio has already found itself in turmoil with Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition, a build full of bugs when launched. The fiasco reached such proportions that Rockstar Games had to apologize. In short, strongly GTA 6.
