Red light overlooked – train drags car 190 meters with: passenger (20) dead

Terrible accident Friday afternoon in West Styrian Groß St. Florian, Deutschlandsberg district: A car collided with a train on an unrestricted level crossing. The 20-year-old passenger was killed and the driver fought for his life with serious injuries. Another passenger was extremely lucky, he escaped with minor injuries.

At around 5:35 p.m., a 22-year-old Pole drove his car on a municipal road from Lebing in the direction of Lebingleinz. A 20-year-old was in the passenger seat and a 36-year-old passenger, both also from Poland, was in the rear drove into the intersection. The 40-year-old train driver from Graz was unable to prevent a collision and the car was hit by the train from the side in the front area and dragged along for about 190 meters. The car was trapped in the front area of ​​the railcar. The 36-year-old in the back of the vehicle was able to get out of the car on his own and probably only suffered minor injuries. The 20-year-old passenger was rescued from the vehicle by emergency services. He was initially responsive, but subsequently died at the scene of the accident from his severe injuries. Driver on Intensive Care The 22-year-old driver of the vehicle had to be freed from the vehicle by the volunteer fire brigade using technical equipment. He was flown to a hospital by a rescue helicopter after receiving first aid from an emergency doctor. He suffered serious injuries and is being treated in intensive care. The train driver and the people on the train were unharmed. The train driver was not under the influence of alcohol, and the result of the blood test for the car driver is still pending. Helicopter use The railway line was closed for the duration of the rescue work. In addition to the police patrols in Groß St. Florian, Wies and Deutschlandsberg, the volunteer fire brigades in Groß St. Florian and Frauental as well as the Deutschlandsberg rescue service and the rescue helicopter were deployed in the rescue operation.
