A band of hackers who attacked Reddit at the beginning of the year demands a very large sum so as not to leak the data it may have stolen.

One of the largest forums in the world, Reddit, is having a hard time with its moderators’ strike. And, as Jacques Chirac put it, “ shit always flies in a squadron another issue has just surfaced with a large ransom demand from web hackers.

$4.5 million and an API change

Last February, the Reddit forum announced that it had been hacked. In this attack, data and the source code of the platform were stolen. Since then, we hadn’t really had any news from the attackers. Who have finally come to manifest themselves.

The BlackCat ransomware group, also known as ALPHV, has just claimed to be behind the attack. To avoid the publication of the data recovered during the hack, he demands a ransom of 4.5 million dollars, but also the cancellation of the measure which made the API pay, a measure which is currently creating a lot of trouble within the Reddit community!

80 gigabytes of data

The spoils of war are large enough to be taken seriously, since all the data collected represents a total of 80 gigabytes of compressed data. These include code, contracts, internal documents as well as the personal data of a number of advertisers and employees. They have not yet been released to the public.

As a reminder, the hackers had used a phishing method to lure a Reddit employee to a fake web page reproducing the home page of the intranet of this platform. Once the latter was connected, his identifiers could be copied by the hackers, which then allowed them to launch their attack. However, users’ personal information would still be safe.
