Reddit Shuts Down Largest Nintendo Switch Game Hacking Community

At the end of last week, the biggest subreddit dedicated to hacking Nintendo Switch games disappeared from the platform. In 3 years of existence, r/NewYuzuPiracy has attracted no less than 70,000 members, who were openly discussing the best ways to get Nintendo titles for free. A successor is expected to emerge soon.

Obviously, the situation on Reddit is very hectic at the moment. While the most important subreddits of the platform have been demonstrating for several against the new pricing policy, another community is today in mourning. Indeed, after 3 years of existence, r/NewYuzuPiracy has permanently closed its doors. Now the page says that “This subreddit was banned due to a violation of Reddit’s content policy prohibiting the creation or re-posting of a subreddit to replenish or serve the same purpose as a previously banned subreddit.”

Indeed, as its name suggests r/NewYuzuPiracy was a new iteration of another subreddit, r/YuzuPiracy, banned by the site on April 21, 2020. A few weeks later, its successor was born, again offering to its members new methods and links to hack (and sometimes, just emulate) Nintendo Swicth games. It therefore took 3 years for Reddit to close this community, which had time to grow significantly.

The Biggest Nintendo Switch Games Hacker Subreddit Disappears

In its last days, r/NewYuzuPiracy indeed counted 69,800 members. As expected, this figure literally exploded when The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom was released. Before the game leaked in full on the web ahead of its release, the subreddit had “only” 37,000 members on the counter. It is therefore probably this sudden and dazzling popularity that has aroused the curiosity of Reddit moderators.

There is no evidence to confirm with certainty that Nintendo is behind this closure. However, knowing the merciless war that the Japanese firm is waging against pirates, as well as against Nintendo Switch emulators since the release of Tears of Kingdom, the thing seems at least possible. Anyway, chances are that the members of r/NewYuzuPiracy haven’t said their last word, and that they are secretly preparing the creation of a new community – on Reddit, or elsewhere.
