refinement to the extreme… but still problems

The Huawei P60, P60 Pro and P60 Art have been made official in China. Three very refined and high-end smartphones, including a main photo sensor taking advantage of a variable aperture lens. Unfortunately, it remains very difficult to make people forget the big problems caused by the American embargo.

Design, screen, photo, battery. The Huawei P60, P60 Pro and P60 Art are the height of refinement. No doubt: the three smartphones just made official in China are positioned in the high-end segment. Behind the finery, however, it remains difficult to forget the absence of Google services, like the Play Store, and the incompatibility with the 5G network.

Huawei P60 Pro

Let’s start with the Huawei P60 Pro which is undoubtedly the most highlighted by the brand. We find an aesthetic leg similar to that of its predecessor, the Huawei P50 Pro, with however a big difference in terms of the photo module. When the old model saw double with two large circles housing a total of four photo sensors, the P60 Pro is a tad more sober. The main camera is greatly enhanced while the other two modules will be housed at the top and bottom of it. For the rest, count on a curved slab on the front and struck with a centered punch.

Here we have a 6.67-inch screen, Full HD + with Oled display and refresh rate varying from 1 to 120 Hz. The smartphone also features a Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1. Regarding the photo, which has always been a key element of Huawei’s smartphones, the P60 Pro relies on a 48 Mpx main sensor with a variable aperture lens (f / 1.4 to f / 4.0). This should offer it great versatility to effectively manage the different light conditions. Optical stabilization is also part of it.

This sensor is accompanied by a 13 Mpx ultra-wide-angle (f / 2.2) and a 48 Mpx (f / 2.1, OIS) telephoto lens for x3.5 optical zooms (up to x100 numerically). At the front, selfies benefit from a definition of 13 Mpx (f / 2.4).

The battery has a capacity of 4815 mAh and can be recharged at 88 W wired and up to 50 W wirelessly. Also count on a storage of 256 or 512 GB (expandable) depending on the variant. The smartphone guarantees waterproofing thanks to the IP68 certification. Also note that it weighs approximately 200 grams for dimensions of 161 x 74.5 x 8.3 mm.

Huawei P60 Art

This generation is an opportunity to discover the Huawei P60 Art. This smartphone shares a lot in common with the P60 Pro, but it marks its difference in certain key elements. On the one hand, visually, the design is revisited with a slightly more sophisticated, less round photo module. The layout of the photo sensors remains the same despite this. On the other hand, in terms of technical characteristics, it goes a little further than its friend.

On the photo part for example, it has a better defined ultra wide-angle of 40 Mpx (f / 2.2). However, it keeps the same main sensor (48 Mpx with variable aperture) and the same telephoto lens (48 Mpx) with x3.5 optical zoom.

The battery goes up to 5100 mAh to promise greater autonomy while the internal storage is also entitled to a boost. The basic version is 512 GB and a 1 TB version also exists. Again, this capacity can be extended.

Huawei P60

The Huawei P60 remains very close to the P60 Pro and P60 Art. He doesn’t make huge concessions. Its design is almost identical to the Pro as is its screen. The most notable difference is at the level of the photo with a less well defined telephoto lens, at 12 Mpx, but capable of going up to an optical zoom x5. The digital magnification is limited to a maximum of x50. The main 48 megapixel sensor with variable aperture is still there and the ultra wide-angle is at 13 Mpx.

Here too there is a 4815 mAh battery, but this time with a maximum wired charge of 66 W. Always 50 W for wireless charging. Storage is also reviewed with a basic 128 GB version, but you can opt for 256 or 512 GB models.

Huawei’s problems

As mentioned above, Huawei’s new smartphones may be very attractive on paper, but they cannot take advantage of the classic Android experience as we know it in Europe with Google services and applications. Despite an 8-series Snapdragon, all three devices make do with 4G. 5G is confiscated from them.

These restrictions come again and again from the American embargo imposed on the brand. The latter being accused by the United States of helping China to carry out espionage activities. Note that the Chinese version of the Huawei P60, P60 Pro and P60 Art run on HarmonyOS. If these come out one day in France, they should be under a stripped version of Android like their predecessor.

Prices of the Huawei P60, P60 Pro and P60 Art

The Huawei P60 is announced in China from 4488 yuan, or around 604 euros excluding tax. Count on a price starting at 6988 yuan for the Huawei P60 Pro, or approximately 940 euros excluding tax. The Huawei P60 Art is displayed from 8988 yuan, approximately 1210 euros HT.

The Huawei P60s will be launched in France and Europe on May 9, 2023 at 2:30 p.m.
