The officials found the 23 people in the completely overcrowded hold. They were transported standing unsecured with the vehicle body closed for several hours. According to the police, all of the people from Syria, Afghanistan, India and Bangladesh were unharmed. They stated that they wanted to go to other European countries.

The driver of the car, a 27-year-old Gambian resident of Italy, was arrested. The public prosecutor’s office in Nidwalden is investigating suspected people smuggling.
