The Nidwalden cantonal police were able to free 23 refugees from a delivery van with Italian license plates on Monday morning, as they write in a statement. The police became aware of the delivery van during a heavy traffic check on the A2 in Buochs and stopped the vehicle at the Hergiswil exit. The officials found the 23 people in the completely overcrowded hold. They were transported standing unsecured with the vehicle body closed for several hours. According to the police, all of the people from Syria, Afghanistan, India and Bangladesh were unharmed. They stated that they wanted to go to other European countries.
The driver of the car, a 27-year-old Gambian resident of Italy, was arrested. The public prosecutor’s office in Nidwalden is investigating suspected people smuggling.
