Refurbishment, then new building – the west exit: Ulli Sima’s expensive bridging

City Councilor for Transport Ulli Sima (SPÖ) rejects the new building project west exit of her green predecessors. First it will be renovated, then 15 years later it will be rebuilt.

Ulli Sima, Vienna’s red traffic councilor, overturns the next project of her predecessor Birgit Hebein (Greens): the new construction of the west exit. Instead, there should be an interim solution: Vienna’s western exit is one of the city’s main traffic arteries. 53,000 cars are on the road every day. But after 54 years it suffers from severe signs of wear and tear. “As a result, the west exit would no longer be usable by 2027,” explains Sima. So time is of the essence. “So I pull the rip cord” But her predecessor’s new building project is currently in the phase before the environmental impact assessment. “And this can take a long time. It was four years for Stadtstrasse, ”says Sima. So the time frame would be too short. “And there is no guarantee that it will be an approvable project. So I pull the rip cord, ”emphasizes the city councilor. In general, the new building had too many faults: over a length of one kilometer, all the trees would have been cleared and all traffic would have shifted to the 13th district. Renovation now, in 15 years of new building “That’s why we decided on an interim solution : the renovation of the existing structure from 2023 ”, describes Sima. But: The renovation will only extend the life of the western exit by 15 years. After that, a completely new building should finally be built. Just different than planned by Sima’s predecessors. “This is our chance of the century for the redesign of the Wiental,” says Sima, who wants to network the Wienfluss and Lainzer Tiergarten. But the interim solution costs money: for the renovation, which only lasts 15 years, as well as for the subsequent new building. The west exit will be very expensive twice within less than 20 years. The exact costs would still be worked out, it said. What is clear, however, is that the completed project would only have cost money once, but it would have lasted 50 years.
