Regions threaten to cut trains

Asphyxiated by rising energy prices, communities are calling on the state for help.

After the calamitous summer of heat waves and huge fires, everyone agreed: rail transport is one of the weapons in the fight against global warming. But no one has spoken about the angry subject: who should finance this increase in power of the trains? In the shorter term, who bears the cost of the explosion in electricity prices, of which the regional trains are very greedy?

As a result, State and local authorities continue to tear each other apart on this theme. If we stick to the texts, it is up to the regions to assume these additional costs. But, in the absence of a boost from the State, the regions risk deciding on the spot. In any case, this is the threat from Jean Rottner, president of the Grand Est region: “Many regional presidents are saying that if at some point there is not some form of questioning of the system (…), we are going to our loss, that is to say that we will close lines, clearly.»
