You don’t really play Mario games (or Nintendo in general) for their story, but it’s always good to hold on to some storyline elements. The publisher was sparing in detail on this subject. However, we know that the story of Super Mario Bros. Wonder does not begin in the Mushroom Kingdom, but in the kingdom of flowers. The trailer also gave us a glimpse of some enemies that will come our way, such as the traditional Goombas and Koopas, various additional creatures including purple hippos, or even Bowser Junior.
Gameplay and novelties
Super Mario Bros. Wonder is a 2D platform game that strongly recalls the old formulas that Nintendo offered at the time. “The classic Mario side-scrolling gameplay is about to take a whole new direction with the arrival of the Wonder Flowers, which turn things upside down to create some spectacular and unexpected moments! Get ready to see pipes come to life, wreak havoc as a giant spike ball, and witness many more wonders!”explains Big N to make our mouths water.
One of the great novelties in gameplay is therefore the introduction of wonder flowers. These radically transform the environment of the game and allow objects or characters to take on new forms. Pipes can twist and start moving in all directions, Mario’s body can lengthen considerably, hordes of enemies (including magic cows) can appear and many other effects are to be expected. Wonder Flowers promise to add a heck of a lot of unpredictability and variety to gameplay, forcing players to adapt to every situation.
Another element of gameplay which caused a lot of reaction during the announcement, the presence of a special apple that turns Mario into an elephant for a limited time. Aside from the possibility of giving blows of trunk to its enemies, the real interest of this item remains to be determined.
To choose the next level, the player must move on a world map offering another camera angle. Some levels are timed and will test your ability to progress quickly without dying. For the rest, there are obstacles, enemies, moving platforms and bosses, as you would expect in a title belonging to the Super Mario Bros. series.
Graphics
Super Mario Bros. Wonder is an old-school horizontal 2D platformer, yes, but with modern graphics. As often with Nintendo, the artistic direction is particularly neat, the sets seem varied and sumptuous, with disparate atmospheres and bright colors that are most pleasing to the eye.
The integration of characters, especially those who are playable, has been the subject of specific work. It is obvious from the images shared on Nintendo, Mario and others benefit from very pronounced features. As a result, they emerge from environments as if they were 3D moving through 2D scenes. There animation quality is exceptional, the movements are fluid, and the facial expressions have never been so worked on a Super Mario Bros.
Multiplayer and playable characters
Super Mario Bros. Wonder lets team up with up three other people (four in total therefore) in local multiplayer on the same Nintendo Switch console. Attention, the lives are common and shared between all the players. An online multiplayer mode has not yet been mentioned by Nintendo.
In addition to Mario, it is possible to control Luigi, Peach, Daisy, Yoshi and Toad. A priori, each character should have their own characteristics and abilities. In the trailer, we see a screen with four Yoshi of different colors, suggesting that the same character can be chosen by several different players at the same time.
Mario changes voice actor
Nintendo is starting a revolution as Super Mario Bros. Wonder will be the first game for which Charles Martinet will no longer be the official voice actor for the mustachioed plumber. Mario will therefore change voice from this opus, but we do not yet know the identity of the voice actor who will take over. Of course, the plumber’s voice should remain substantially the same.
