Relegation has “changed everything”: Terodde surprisingly extended at Schalke

Descent has “changed everything”
Terodde surprisingly extended at Schalke

Actually, Simon Terodde has already said that he will leave Schalke 04 after the season. But he didn’t expect relegation from the Bundesliga, which is why the surprising turnaround came: The attacker extended it – and not just for one year.

Soccer professional Simon Terodde has now extended his expiring contract with Schalke 04, who have been relegated to the Bundesliga. The penultimate of the past Bundesliga season confirmed the agreement in the morning in a 30-second Twitter video that ended with the words “Thank you Simon for staying”.

On April 5, the 35-year-old declared that he did not want to extend his expiring contract. “I was absolutely certain that we would manage to stay up in the Bundesliga together. That’s why it was clear to me a few weeks ago that my path would end at Schalke,” said Terodde in a club statement on his statement at the time. “That’s why I told those responsible about my decision at the time. The descent changed everything for me.”

According to the club, the new contract is in two parts. The total term of the contract is therefore three years. At the end of each season, the sports management will decide whether Terodde will continue to play for the licensed team or support the club in another capacity. In addition, the Bocholter native will complete a trainee program and receive full support in acquiring trainer licenses.

For Schalke’s sports director Peter Knäbel, the extension with the leading player is also a signal to the strong competition in the 2nd division. “He should also give all Schalke players hope and the certainty that we will attack,” he said in the morning on the sidelines of the presentation of the new sports director André Hechelmann. With 30 goals in the 2021/2022 season, he led the club back to the Bundesliga as second division champions in 2022. With a total of 172 goals, Terodde is the record scorer in the 2nd Bundesliga. He had replaced the longtime record holder Dieter Schatzschneider (153 goals).
