Reddit’s /r/Place social experiment is complete. But you can admire the transformations of the fresco during the five days of play, thanks to the shots at regular intervals.
The /r/Place social experiment on Reddit ended on the night of April 4-5. For several days, Internet users around the world had fun filling a blank space with colored pixels – called “tiles”. Plenty of drawings have thus emerged: flags, cultural or historical references, memes, personalities.
We will long remember, in France at least, the pixel battle that took place between French and Spanish streamers, during the last three days of Reddit Place. Of course, the event was not supposed to turn out to be a rat race. It was supposed to be a unique opportunity to bring together communities on Reddit who otherwise stay in their corner.
This Pixel War between the French and Spanish communities, if it attracted a lot of attention by its magnitude, cannot however hide everything that happened elsewhere on the canvas. After all, the pitched battle only occupied a small piece of the large interactive white square, at the very bottom left. There were many other things to see, elsewhere.
The timelapse of /r/Place Reddit
The /r/Place has now disappeared, but it is possible to relive the life and death of this fascinating parenthesis of the web in an accelerated way, thanks to the timelapses concocted by Internet users. The one shared on April 5 by Pachimariblucz on Reddit offers a good summary everywhere else on the mural, such as the difficulty the Canadian community had in drawing the maple leaf on its flag…
The timelapses offer another point of view of /r/Place, since throughout the adventure, some drawings have not survived – we do not see them for example on the screenshots supposed to show the situation just before the disappearance of all the tiles. We can thus see the evolution of the fresco, the extension of certain drawings, the disappearance of others, etc.
There are many references in /r/Place, and not all of them may be familiar to you. The good news is that Internet users are working together to explain each mosaic. An atlas of /r/Place has been set up. That way, you’ll know when the next edition of /r/Place comes back, one day. Maybe in five years.
