Amazon seems to want to take advantage of the MGM franchises that the studio has recently acquired. “Robocop”, “The Revenge of a Blonde” or even “Stargate”: many titles are thus likely to return to our screens soon…
Many well-known titles, properties of MGM, may soon be adapted for the small or the big screen. Amazon Studios has reportedly identified a batch of franchises from its acquisition of MGM that the company now plans to develop into television or film projects.
Thus, according to TheWrap and Deadline, Amazon is actively producing new films and series from the Stargate franchises (started in 1994), with the release of a film first, and Robocop (started in 1987), with the release of a series first this time.
The studio is said to have similar plans for the cult saga A Blonde’s Revenge (film and series) based on the novel of the same name by Amanda Brown, the first part of which saw the light of day in 2001 with Reese Witherspoon in the role of ‘She Woods. The feature was followed by The Blonde Strikes Back in 2003 and a straight-to-video spin-off, Legally Blondes, in 2009. A Legally Blonde 3, written by Mindy Kaling and Dan Goor, is also reportedly in the works.
Also on the small screen, shows based on Fame (1980), the musical film by Alan Parker which has already been entitled to two spin-off series and a remake, on the Barbershop franchise (2002) with Ice Cube, and on that of the Seven mercenaries started in 1960, itself a remake of Seven Samurai (1954) by Akira Kurosawa, should see the light of day soon.
On the big screen side, two feature films are planned: one on The Thomas Crown Affair (1968) and the other on the franchise The Pink Panther born in 1963, a film which could also be animated. Finally, a Poltergeist project would also be under consideration.
