Renault and Google strengthen their partnership to develop the connected car of tomorrow


Renault Group and Google announced on Tuesday, November 8 a strengthening of their partnerships and the signing of new agreements. The goal? Developing the connected vehicle of tomorrow and accelerating the automaker’s digital transformation. Google notably becomes the group’s preferred cloud provider.

It’s been almost four years since Renault and Google work hand in hand. In 2019, the French group decided to join forces with Waymo, a subsidiary of the American firm, to develop in the autonomous vehicle sector.

In July 2020, the collaboration between the two companies has taken a new turn. The diamond brand called on Google to host its industrial data in the company’s cloud. In addition to taking care of storage, Google also had to help Renault boost its production capacities by analyzing this data via AI.

And on this Tuesday, November 8, Renault Group and Google have announced yet another strengthening of their partnership, materialized by the signing of new agreements. Together ithey intend to create the “Software Defined Vehicle”, be the connected car of tomorrow.

The goal ? Bring together “the best of the automotive and digital worlds, to offer new on-demand services and enable continuous vehicle updates, building on the existing collaboration on the Android Automotive operating system and the Google’s cloud technology.

In particular, this will involve the development of new on-board software of the vehicle as well as the development of a digital twin (Digital Twin) in the cloud. This will be a virtual copy of each vehicle. Equipped with advanced artificial intelligence capabilities, this twin will allow Renault teams to test “new services” and create more easily”new on-board and off-board applications”.

The cloud for more personalization in Renault vehicles

Otherwise, Renault is counting on this partnership to strengthen its use of Google Cloud technologies in its future vehicles to better manage data capture and analysis. Thus, the “Software Defined Vehicle” will include in particular:

  • predictive maintenance to better detect and rectify failures in near real time, if necessary
  • A personalized experience of life on board the vehicle (In-Car services) to adapt to driving behavior, to common destinations (such as electric charging stations)
  • Insurance models based on actual usage and driving behavior
