(Reuters) – Nissan remains in talks with Renault over their alliance, the Japanese automaker’s chief executive Makoto Uchida said on Thursday, though he declined to comment on the likelihood of a deal this month. .
“We would like to improve how we can be stronger together,” he told Reuters from New York.
Nissan plans to take a stake in a new electric car unit that Renault is looking to create. Sources previously told Reuters that the automakers are gearing up to announce a possible restructured alliance this month.
The Nissan chief added that 2023 would be a tough year for the automotive sector, saying he expected global sales to remain below their 2019 level.
“I think next year is not going to be any easier,” he said.
Makoto Uchida said he observed with interest the development of the partnership between Renault and Google Cloud in the field of connected vehicles and software, and he said he was ready to work in this field with the French manufacturer and other partners.
“I know our partner Renault is moving in this direction and there are many areas where we can cooperate,” he said.
