BRIEF // Nostalgia, when you hold us. Here is the return of the Walkman, also called portable cassette player. The initiative is the work of Renault, in collaboration with the French start-up We Are Rewind. This PlayeR5 displays all the codes of the future electric R5.
This year, Renault is celebrating the 50th anniversary of its legendary R5. The manufacturer has decided to revisit this icon of the 1970s with the Renault 5 Prototype, whose particularity will be to be 100% electric. This is not expected before 2024.
To accompany this news “supercar” – nickname given to the R5 when it was created – Renault tackled another icon, the Walkman or portable cassette player, which appeared in July 1979, thanks to Sony.
For the occasion, the car manufacturer has teamed up with the French start-up We Are Rewind, which has revisited this pure nomadic product. This idea of retrofit is due to the successes of the film Guardians of the Galaxy and the Netflix series Stranger Thingswhere the Walkman holds a prominent place.
Always rectangular, this portable cassette player uses aluminum for a “cold touch” and offers 10 hours of autonomy thanks to the use of a rechargeable battery, instead of energy-consuming AA batteries. Now Bluetooth, you can pair a wireless headset or a wireless speaker.
The Renault version, called PlayeR5, displays all the codes linked to the famous R5: a “yellow metallic body, with a striped side reminiscent of bumpers and a red tinted window reminiscent of taillights“.
Marketed at 189 € on the Renault site, The Originals, the PlayeR5 comes with a real blank cassette accompanied by its exclusive rewinder, the pencil. Only the real will understand…
