While Renault has just announced the big return of the Twingo in a 100% electric version, the diamond brand is returning to the forefront. This Thursday, November 30, the French manufacturer decided to share the first official photos of the R5 E-Tech, the electric reissue of the famous Renault 5.

The R5 moves into the modern era

Thanks to these photos, we first notice that the front lights have had a new look, adopting a aggressive and angular comma style. This “pupil” effect is a tribute to an advertising sport of the brand released in 1972. The air intake on the hood also has a wind of modernity, which displays in its center a bright charge indicator. The latter forms a 5 when the charge is complete. Rather fun in addition to being practical.

The wheel arches widen the silhouette of the R5 and recall with its inflated wings the style of the R5 Turbo. Finally we come to the rear lights, which now include a light function which extends the side of the bodywork. According to Renault, “this element contributes to the aerodynamic performance of the R5, avoiding penalizing air swirls”.

Note as the first prototype of the R5 E-Tech suggested, this reissue will give pride of place to bright colors. In addition to the yellow visible in these photos, the city car will also be available in blue and green.

New platform and two battery packs

But that’s not all since the diamond brand has revealed some additional information about its future vehicle. We now know its size: 3.92 meters long. Furthermore, the manufacturer confirms that the R5 E-Tech will be based on the CMF-BEV platformnow called AmpR Small (an electric adaptation of the platform used on the latest Clio).

This allows the R5 E-Tech to benefit from a multi-link rear axle, a component generally reserved for the upper segment, which will provide better stability and handling. Finally, we learn that the city car will be available with two battery packs:

  • a 52 kWh battery for an estimated range of 400 km in the WLTP cycle
  • And later, a 40 kWh battery (which will probably lower prices)

The promise of €25,000 is kept

The autonomy of this more modest battery remains to be determined. As promised, the entry ticket will be around 25,000 euros. For those in a hurry, know that it is now possible to purchase for 150 euros the R5 R Pass thread cutter.

To put it simply, this pass will allow users to pre-order their R5 E-Tech 10 days before orders open to the general public. Holders of the wire cutter will be able to receive their vehicle from fall 2024 according to Renault. For good reason, the production of their example will be given priority within the Electricity-manufacturing division of Douai in France.
