Renault’s Twingo is celebrating its 30th anniversary this year, and to celebrate this new decade that is beginning, the diamond group has unveiled a new version of this iconic city car. During its conference dedicated to investors and to Ampere, its new 100% electric subsidiary, the group led by Luca de Meo presented an electric Twingo concept which will be marketed in 2026, at a price of less than €20,000. This is the famous Legend project that we were talking about this morning and which was announced before this meeting.

“Ampere aims first and foremost to pursue excellence in technology and customer experience: two native platforms for electric vehicles, a strong range of seven vehicles, a new generation of centralized electronic architecture, a software suite of high-level Android-based, and the most compact and efficient EV supplier and production ecosystem, all created in Europe”declared Thierry Piéton, financial director of Renault Group.

To do this, Ampere intends to democratize electric cars in Europe by targeting as many people as possible. The group is aiming for price parity between electric and thermal vehicles ahead of competition in segments B (compact) and C (mid-size). Renault believes it has reached a milestone with its Scenic E-Tech, which has reached total ownership cost parity with hybrid vehicles. Sales price parity with thermal vehicles will be achieved by 2027/2028 with the 2nd generation of electric vehicles (successors to Mégane E-Tech and Scenic E-Tech), while preserving margins. In the B segment, Ampere will launch the Renault 5 in 2024 and Renault 4 in 2025 (entry price for the R5 of around €25,000), then with the new electric Twingo with a price below €20,000.

The Twingo has always been designed for exclusively urban use. This new version will offer consumption at the best level with only 10 kWh/100 km, CO2 emissions reduced by 75% compared to the average of thermal vehicles sold in Europe in 2023 over the entire life cycle, zero carbon emissions. CO2 in the exhaust and less consumption of raw materials thanks to its compact size. Made in Europe, it will be offered for less than €100/month with an entry price of less than €20,000 (before deduction of the ecological bonus).

From a design point of view, the new Twingo follows in the footsteps of the first generation of the vehicle, but adds two doors at the rear. The marketing of this car is planned for 2026, which puts us in a few years, and the competition did not wait for Ampere to strike hard. Thus, Citroën presented its ë-C3 last month, also marketed for less than €20,000, but from 2025.

For its part, Volkswagen unveiled the ID.2all last March, an electric city car which will be marketed for less than €25,000, still in 2025. This concept is supposed to embody the new face of the brand, which nevertheless drew on its DNA, notably the Golf and the Polo.

In addition to the five ranges already present, Ampere plans two other vehicles for the 2nd generation, or seven cars in total by 2031. The group is targeting sales of around 300,000 units in 2025 and around 1 million in 2031 for one part. market around 10%.
