Discussions have failed between Renault and Volkswagen for a possible collaboration around an entry-level electric car, a source within the French manufacturer said on Friday.
Renault indicated in February that it was in preliminary discussions with the German giant to share the production of its future Twingo.
It will position itself in the emerging segment of small, inexpensive electric cars, preparing for the possible arrival of Chinese models.
“We had discussions with Volkswagen but for various reasons, we did not agree on the conditions,” this source at Renault told AFP, confirming information from Reuters.
A Renault spokesperson confirmed, however, that it was continuing its Twingo project for less than 20,000 euros, planned for marketing from 2026.
She added that the French manufacturer was “discussions with other partners”.
Volkswagen management did not wish to comment on this information on Friday, but reiterated that the group was studying “various options” to expand its range of electric cars downwards.
While the future ID2 is expected around 25,000 euros, with cousins from the Skoda and Cupra brands, another car is expected around 20,000 euros.
“An important criterion is economic feasibility and all possible scenarios are carefully evaluated before a possible expansion of the product portfolio. However, no decision has yet been made,” Volkswagen reiterated.
Renault boss Luca de Meo, a fan of collaborations, declared at the end of February that it was “classic to share platforms or factories to keep costs low”. And “imagine the importance of seeing European industry united around a project,” he said, like Airbus in aeronautics.
Renault could, however, do without a partner because it will “sell a lot” of Twingos, assured Mr. de Meo.
