Renovation of the Zurich department store – Jelmoli on Zurich Bahnhofstrasse will close at the end of 2024 – News

  • One of the oldest department stores in Switzerland will close its doors at the end of 2024.
  • The Jelmoli on Bahnhofstrasse in Zurich will no longer exist in its current form.
  • That writes the owner of Jelmoli, the real estate company Swiss Prime Site (SPS).

So far, a sale has failed, writes SPS in a statement. “The intensive discussions with numerous possible partners have not led to the desired success to date.” The real estate company cites the dynamic online trade and changing consumer behavior as reasons for the conversion and repositioning of the Jelmoli property, which are increasingly causing difficulties for shops. Jelmoli will continue to operate as before until the end of 2024. The house will then be rebuilt from 2025 to 2027, according to SPS.

After that, it will be “adapted to market needs and operated in a new form”. In concrete terms, this means that the building previously operated as a department store will become a mixed-use property.

The ground floor and basement remain retail areas

The department store currently has an area of 24,000 square meters, which will be reduced to 10,000 square meters. “The ground floor and the basement will continue to serve as retail space,” says a spokesman when asked by Keystone-SDA. However, there will no longer be shops on the first, second and third floors as before. SPS is setting up office space there instead.

The Pallas Clinics, located on the fourth floor, will remain in the building, as will the Holmes-Place fitness center on the top floor. Furthermore, there should also be gastronomy offers in the building, this is conceivable, for example, on the roof, provided that the city agrees to such plans, according to the spokesman.

850 employees affected

The building will be completely renovated and remodeled. However, there will still be retail space. The conversion should be completed in 2027. A total of 850 employees were affected by the closure, a spokesman for SPS told SRF.
