When it comes to graphics cards, things are thought out very early: at NVIDIA, we are working on the post-Blackwell era, which will be the post-Lovelace era.

The GeForce RTX 40 series belong to what is known in authorized circles as the Ada Lovelace generation, named after a programmer known for having created the first real computer program.

In a few months, we should discover the next generation of GPUs from NVIDIA with a generation whose code name we have already known for a while, David Blackwell, in order to honor a mathematician who was the first African-American member of the National Academy of Sciences.

An astronomer after a mathematician

Today, our colleagues from VideoCardz relays news that had gone a little under the radar. A piece of news which gives the first information about the name of the “still after” generation. The always knowledgeable kopite7kimi confirmed to VideoCardz that NVIDIA would pay tribute to Vera Rubin for this “next-next-generation”.

Wikipedia states that Vera Rubin is “ born July 23, 1928 in Philadelphia and died December 25, 2016 in Princeton. [Elle] is an American astronomer mainly known for her study of the rotation speed of stars in spiral galaxies which consolidated the hypothesis of the presence of dark matter in the periphery of galaxies “.

Of course, NVIDIA still has plenty of time to change its plans, especially since the information is not confirmed by the American firm which does not usually comment on rumors.

Little chance of animating the RTX 6000

The latest NVIDIA roadmaps published on the Net reported GX200 GPUs for 2025 and following the GB200 which are expected during the year 2024 to succeed the GH200.

The GH200s belong to the Hooper generation (named after Grace Hooper) and they will logically be replaced by the Blackwell generation GB200s. Kopite7kimi specifies that the GX200 should rather be called GR200, but is careful not to indicate whether they are intended for professionals like the Hoopers or whether we can consider their release for the general public.

In the first case, the GX200s would be reserved for the world of servers and other data centers. In the second case (unlikely), they could animate hypothetical GeForce RTX 6000s.
