After counting the postal votes from the second round, Atici is ahead of Urgese with 2,744 votes.
Experience has shown that this advantage is sufficient in the urban canton.
The final result with the ballot box votes is expected from 6 p.m.
With the election of 54-year-old Atici, the balance of power in the Basel city government remains balanced: three SP members face two liberals (LDP) and one from the center party, with a GLP woman in power in between.
Atici now received 24,683 postal votes, Luca Urgese 21,939. The left-green parties were now behind Atici, and the bourgeois parties FDP, LDP, Center and SVP were behind challenger Luca Urgese. The replacement election for the cantonal government became necessary with the election of Beat Jans (SP) to the Federal Council.
Atici is 54 years old and was previously a Grand Councilor for 16 years and a National Councilor for 4 years. He completed training as an industrial engineer in Turkey and is now a catering entrepreneur.
Lead can no longer be recovered
In the first government election round on March 3rd, voter turnout was 55 percent of the approximately 104,000 eligible voters in the city canton. The proportion of postal votes was within the usual range at just under 96 percent. Accordingly, only around 2,300 votes were cast in the ballot box. Accordingly, Atici’s lead of a good 2,700 postal votes cannot be made up with ballot box votes in the second round of voting.
The election to the regional council takes place in Basel-Stadt parallel to the election to the government. Conradin Cramer was all but elected when Atici withdrew after the first round of voting. Now in the second round of voting, Cramer has been elected with 36,847 votes.
