Replacement of the domestic fleet: Qantas buys planes from Airbus instead of Boeing

Replacement of the domestic fleet
Qantas buys planes from Airbus instead of Boeing

The Australian airline Qantas is replacing its aging Boeing fleet with new aircraft from Airbus. The Europeans could deliver up to 134 aircraft. Your shares are therefore among the big DAX winners.

The European aircraft manufacturer Airbus has outperformed its US rival Boeing in a major order in Australia. The Australian airline Qantas wants to replace its aging home fleet of Boeing 737 and 717 planes primarily with aircraft from Airbus, as Qantas announced in Sydney.

If the Qantas committees agree, up to 134 orders will be sent to Airbus for its A320neo and A220 model families. According to this, 40 jets are to be firmly ordered, 94 more would be purchase options that could be obtained over a delivery window of more than ten years.

Qantas intends to secure the order by the end of fiscal 2022. No financial details were given, but there are significant discounts on the list price, according to Qantas. This is common for bulk orders. Airbus manager Christian Scherer said he was looking forward to the delivery of the new Qantas fleet and to working with the Australians.

The order placed by Airbus is a setback for the modernized Boeing 737 Max aircraft version, which has been plagued by crises in recent years after crashes and flight bans.

The move was well received on the stock exchange. In the morning, Airbus was one of the biggest winners in the Dax with a plus of more than 3 percent. The analysts at Citi, however, classified the swing in such a way that the order was positive, but not huge.

The first deliveries are already planned for 2023/24, so that more than 100 percent of the A320 orders will be covered by 2025. This gives medium-term deliveries a strong upward impetus.
