One of the quirks of Apple’s repair services has just come to an end. Until now, the repair of damaged FaceID sensors on the iPhone could not be done separately, which by default involved the complete replacement of the device. The customer then left with a new iPhone, while the damaged unit was presumably sent for recycling. A radical solution whose exact reason is unknown, but which was undoubtedly linked to the internal design of notched iPhones and their sophisticated facial recognition system.

Last February, however, Apple found (and belatedly) a way to change the FaceID sensors without replacing the entire iPhone, but this new repair protocol unfortunately did not concern the iPhone X, launched in 2017. device was therefore still covered by the full replacement policy. A memo shared by Apple internally and viewed by MacRumors However, we learn that the firm can now replace faulty FaceID sensors on an iPhone X.

iPhone X is now more widely repairable

In other words, iPhone X can now enjoy FaceID repairs just like iPhone XS/XR and other newer models. Good news for the user, who can keep his phone after repair, but also for Apple. This intervention becomes less costly for the company and more respectful of the environment… another challenge for Apple, which seeks, like its competitors, to reduce its environmental impact and lighten its carbon footprint.

Recall that Apple announced, at the end of last year, the forthcoming establishment of a self-service repair program. The latter will allow the group’s customers to buy official spare parts and carry out repairs on their Apple products themselves. An initiative which should materialize in the coming months and which has already been taken up by other brands, including Samsung.
