Is Bartsch about to leave the Bundestag?

In Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, the SPD and the Left are negotiating a joint government. According to a report, a prominent federal politician is being talked about when appointing the ministries.

Left parliamentary group leader Dietmar Bartsch may be facing a change to state politics, according to a media report. Again NDR reports, the 63-year-old is being treated as a hot candidate for the post of interior minister in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. There the SPD and the Left are currently working on a coalition agreement for a joint government under Prime Minister Manuela Schwesig.

Bartsch had only been confirmed a few days ago together with Amira Mohamed Ali at the head of the left parliamentary group. It had previously been speculated that they could lose their offices because of the poor performance. In the election on September 26th, the left missed the five percent hurdle with 4.9 percent of the vote, but still moved into the new Bundestag with three direct mandates.

Bartsch was born in Stralsund and has been a member of the Bundestag since 1998, with one interruption from 2002 to 2005. In a red-red government, he would take over the interior department from the CDU, with which the SPD had previously governed. The house had been run by the CDU since 2006. Bartsch takes part in the coalition negotiations in Schwerin.

Left negotiator Simone Oldenburg is, according to the report, acted as education minister and deputy head of government. In the previous government, the CDU had headed three of the eight ministries. Meanwhile, Till Backhaus, the longest-serving minister in Germany, is considered set on the SPD side. Since 1998 he has been responsible for the agriculture department.
