Many minors were arrested in connection with the violence committed following Nahel’s death. In recent days, the government has pointed to the responsibility of parents. The debate divides the political class where the right is favorable while the left opposes it.

Should we or should we not financially sanction the parents of children guilty of degradation? The question is at the heart of the political debate and divides the political class. The right is in favor and calls for the responsibility of families, but the left opposes it.

The government is considering the matter

The president of the Republicans of the Departmental Council of Haute-Marne, Nicolas Lacroix, calls for calibrated sanctions against certain parents deemed to be at fault, through deductions from allowances such as the RSA or the housing solidarity fund. “I’m talking about suspension and not deletion, I’m talking about probation, you have to be quite fine, precise and fair in the sanctions that you will have to take”, he explains.

The left, for its part, denounces ineffective, even counterproductive sanctions. “In working-class neighborhoods, it is fathers and mothers of families who get up at 4 or 5 a.m. They have a wide range of hours. They come home late at night, which is already a difficulty. still precariousness on people who are in great pain, so we need another response than sanctions”, testifies Thomas Portes, deputy to France Insoumise of Seine-Saint-Denis.

And the government is looking into it. Traveling to Reims on Monday, Gérald Darmanin said that once order was restored, the question of family responsibility should be asked.
