Rescue too dangerous – the seriously injured had to endure the night on the mountain

A 27-year-old mountaineer had to live through anxious hours on Monday night in East Tyrol: After a Pole got lost while descending the Rauchkofel and was seriously injured in a fall, he made an emergency call late in the evening. A search operation had to be stopped due to the dangerous terrain. Only in the morning could the injured person be rescued by the emergency helicopter.

The 27-year-old lost his way when descending from the Rauchkofel via the Salzsteig in the Lienz Dolomites and got lost in rough terrain. Shortly before 11 p.m., he finally made an emergency call and said that he had fallen and suffered a serious foot injury. The operation was too dangerous for rescuers. Mountain rescue and the alpine police immediately launched a search operation using a drone. “The man could then be located in extremely steep and impassable terrain. An attempt was made to get to him – due to the darkness, the extreme terrain and the high risk for the emergency team, the attempt had to be canceled and the rescue operation interrupted at around 2.30 a.m.,” the executive said. The Pole had to be rescued only in the morning stay the whole night on the mountain. It was not until Monday around 7 a.m. that he could finally be rescued with the rescue helicopter and taken to the Lienz district hospital.
