In January 2021, Capcom announced an original project for the Resident Evil license, multiplayer, with Re:Verse. The idea seemed pretty good on paper at the time, since the game offers a deathmatch mode, opposing six players who embody the iconic characters of the franchise. The games last five minutes and when you are eliminated, you become a biological weapon, which can be more and more powerful over time.
However, the months that followed did not give any new information about the title, which was even postponed twice, without us having more details on the gameplay. It was only during the summer of 2022 that Capcom came back to us, sharing with us, in particular, a release date. It has also been confirmed that the title will only be available for free for owners of Resident Evil: Village, and that others will have to pay €39.99…
What had to happen happened: few players have been interested in the title since its launch on October 28. Indeed, the peak of concurrent users is only 2,080 (which is low for a Resident Evil production), and this occurred during a two-day early access, before the release… Since then, the thousand simultaneous players has not been exceeded, with a small average of 367 users. Add to this the fact that a lack of players can negatively impact the gameplay, with a longer waiting time, Resident Evil Re:Verse could very quickly sink. For comparison, Resident Evil 5, released in 2009, has better stats.
The good news, however, is that the developers have announced that content is planned that is supposed to bring new things, like playable characters, creatures or maps. Let’s hope that the title manages to find its audience, given the popularity of the license, but the economic model seems to be a major obstacle to the potential success of Resident Evil Re:Verse.
