Riots in Tbilisi after the death of the cameraman

A Georgian journalist is beaten up in a Pride parade and later found dead in his bed. The incident caused quite a stir, with members of parliament attacking each other. At the center is Prime Minister Garibashvili: because of his sympathy for orthodox gay haters.

Riots broke out in the Georgian parliament after the death of a cameraman who was seriously injured during protests by anti-gay demonstrators. Opposition MPs disrupted the parliamentary session and demanded the resignation of Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili, as recorded by the independent television station Mtavari. This resulted in chaotic scenes in which members of parliament fought and occupied the chair of the parliamentary president.

It was only after four female MPs who had occupied the chair were forcibly removed from the room that the session could be resumed. The opposition blames the ruling Georgian Dream party for the attack on the cameraman and other journalists.

37-year-old Alexander Laschkarawa, who worked for the independent broadcaster TV Pirweli, was found dead in his bed on Sunday morning. The cameraman was beaten last Monday by counter-demonstrators who protested against a march of the so-called LGBTQ movement. In total, more than 50 journalists were physically attacked during the protest. Laschkarawa suffered fractures of the bones in his face. The Interior Ministry announced an investigation into the 37-year-old’s death. Four suspects were arrested for the attack.

Thousands in front of the parliament in Tbilisi

Laschkarawa’s death sparked great outrage: on Sunday, around 8,000 people demonstrated in front of the parliament in Tbilisi and called for the government to resign. New protests have been announced for the evening. “The government not only encourages violence against journalists, it is part of that violence,” said Nodar Meladze, editor-in-chief at TV Pirweli. The government assembled violent groups who physically attacked independent media. Police officers have also repeatedly attacked journalists.

Garibashvili described the protest movement as an anti-church conspiracy led by ex-president Mikhail Saakashvili. He again promised a speedy investigation into Lashkarawa’s death.

Georgia is considered a very conservative country, the Orthodox Church is extremely powerful in the Caucasus republic. Prime Minister Garibashvili also spoke out against the LGBTQ movement’s Pride Parade. During the Pride parades, demonstrations for the rights of sexual minorities are taking place around the world. The English abbreviation LGBTQ stands for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer.
