restaurants are unlikely to reopen on January 20, 2021

Wednesday, January 20, 2021 was the date hoped for by President Emmanuel Macron and his government for the reopening of the restaurants. According to RTL information, this should be postponed.

In November, President Emmanuel Macron hoped that restaurants would reopen from Wednesday, January 20, 2021 if the coronavirus pandemic was brought under control. According to government information from our colleagues in RTL, it will not be: "The executive has already made its decision and the reopening date, which had been set at the end of November by Emmanuel Macron, has been postponed", can we read in particular. The government therefore seems to already know that it will not be for Wednesday, January 20, 2021, although we are still awaiting the consequences of the end of the year holidays on the health crisis.

Prime Minister Jean Castex has already announced this decision and is preparing to formalize the postponement of the reopening of restaurants in the days to come. In his wishes on Thursday, December 31, 2020, Emmanuel Macron said that the year 2021 will be placed under the sign of hope, but it seems that it is starting rather badly for a sector seriously in crisis.

The catering sector in serious crisis

If this upcoming decision undermines this sector, some members of the government were already pessimistic about the reopening of restaurants. In December 2020, the Minister of the Economy, Finance and Recovery, Bruno Lemaire, for example, expressed doubts. He had confided, without filter, to France Info : "I cannot say for sure that we will reopen bars and restaurants on January 20, that would be dishonest."

Still according to the sources of RTL, the government should also, in the coming days, at a press conference, announce the aid measures that will be put in place to help the catering sector economically. As Bruno Lemaire announced last December at France Info, aid should be extended. The health crisis continues to impact various professional sectors. This is also the case for culture: cinema, concert halls for shows are unable to reopen for the moment.
